The sanitary difficulty ‘is complicated by the existence of kuchas [harrow lanes] where it is impossible, for lack of space, for soil carts to go. From such places all refuse must be carried out by hand. It is noticeable how clean and swept the insides of the houses are and how squalid outside … Through this rotting channel, is discharged sullage,...

206 x 153 mm. View looking towards the church, with the cricket ground at the right and palm trees in the background. This small stone church, named Christ Church, was the property of the Church Missionary Society and possessed a school room at its rear and a mission house (probably the building at the right seen here) to one side.

Part of the Military Barracks can be seen at the left, with a portion of the lake beyond. At the far side of this a portion of the Galle Face Cemetery (opened in 1803) is visible. The Galle Face Hotel (Y3022L/115) is situated among the trees in the distance.

273x211mm. View looking along the palm-shaded drive towards the hotel, with the porte-cochere entrance at the left and verandahs at the right. Established in the 1880s, the hotel became one of the leading establishments on the island, and is shown in this print before it was rebuilt on an enlarged scale in 1894.

Scope and Contents From the File: Contains prints the majority of which are circa 290 x 215 mm., but 4-6, 9-18, 20-27, 51-55, 91-94, and 96-98 are approximately 140 x 100 mm. Nos. 4-27, 51 are scenes of the Royal Visit in November 1905, 19-26 being triumphal arches. The other subjects are the Maharajah and his family (1-3), Lallgarh Palace (28-50), Gujner (52-64), the Old Palace (65-82, 85), Bikaner City (83-84, 891-98 and Bikaner forces (89-90). There are printed captions: the collection is in a richly bound album...
