This small stone church, named Christ Church, was the property of the Church Missionary Society and possessed a school room at its rear and a mission house (probably the building at the right seen here) to one side.

Established in the 1880s, the hotel became one of the leading establishments on the island, and is shown in this print before it was rebuilt on an enlarged scale in 1894.
