251 x 200 mm. View looking towards the entrance to the Elephanta Caves, a wide and low opening in the rockface with overhanging vegetation and Indian figure posed at the mouth. The island of Elephanta (named by the Portuguese who found a huge stone elephant there) is situated between Bombay Island and the mainland some six miles east of the Fort. The caves were hewn out of the rockface towards the end of the Buddhist period, probably in the eighth century AD.

Quarter-plate. Ground ounging logs, i.e. pushing with head. [The opening of commercial relations with Upper Burma was responsible for the formation of the Bombay-Burma Trading Corporation. A licence to export timber was obtained from King Mindon in 1863, and the company floated the following year].

147 x 101 mm. Showing elephants at work shifting teak in the yards of the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation. The annotation on the reverse states 'Photo by J. Jackson, Rangoon'. The date attribution, possibly before 1876, is based on the date attributed to an image in a comparable photograph album held by the Roots Collection, Singapore.

Some of the photographs are captioned in ink; in other cases the titles have been derived from duplicate copies in Davies' other Indian album or from other photographs of the same scenes.
