Customs House, Shanghai [1890s], 1890 - 1899

Scope and Contents

269 x 210 mm. Printed from a cracked plate. View of the main façade of the Customs House on the Shanghai Bund. A red brick building, with details in ‘Tudor’ style, the Customs House consists of a central block with a square clock tower rising above the main entrance, flanked by two projecting wings terminating with gables. The building was completed in 1893.

Quarter-plate (landscape format). The Bakau Co Ltd: turns out about 80 tons per month: exported to England, France Germany, Holland, U.S.A. The best cutch is obtained from the Tungah tree. Tungah tree gives 61-63% of tannin absorbable by hide. [Showing forest behind and a tram-lines leading from the works along ? pier].

From internal evidence it was compiled by Dr Cuthbert Christy, but was not with his papers and photographs received from the Royal African Society in 1972. The first 33 slides in the collection are Ektachromes numbered 501-533 by Marnham. They relate to a a very small area of the island, Kyrenia on the north coast, St Hilarion Castle on the heights behind the town, and Bellapais about 3 miles along the coast. In addition there are 5 Ektachromes of Curium on the south-west coast. These are stamped Sep [19]61 and arranged by processing number.

The album also contains 40 pages of letterpress pasted on the left-hand pages which contain short articles on various aspects of Cypriot archaeology and letters solicited by Cesnola praising the exhibition of the artefacts. The front free endpaper has a hand-written inscription in Italian from Alexander Di Cesnola to Edwardo De Martino, dated April 29 1881. The title-page in full...
