To the right of the central entrance arch a semi-circular verandah looks out over the gardens. The main residence of the Raja was in Mysore city, but as well as this palace he also kept a summer residence in Ootacamund in the Nilgiri Hills.

Fayrer's house was the only building on the eastern side of the Residency complex in which families were sheltered. It also served as James Outram's headquarters and was where Sir Henry Lawrence died. Bourne no. 1027.
