Malabar, a Tieru girl ‘just awake’, 1901
A posed portrait study of a half-naked girl stretching. A note by Miss Hartley states: ‘Tieru? Possibly a garbled version of ‘Thiyya’. (Known as Eylabas [?] in southern Kerala). A toddy tapping caste, the highest of the once untouchable castes. They bear a strong resemblance in facial type, customs and character to the Nayars.’ See also Y3022P/58, Y3022P/75, Y3022P/80 and Y3022P/84.
