Metcalfe Sunter came to Sierra Leone as a deacon in 1870; his work for the College included arranging its affiliation to the University of Durham in 1875. He was appointed H.M. Inspector of Schools for West Africa in 1882, a post he held until his death in Lagos in 1892.
