East Africa
It is not known how the RCS acquired this collection of uncaptioned glass negatives. It is believed that they represent East Africa, but research will be required to identify the photographers, dates of creation and the slides' subjects.
East Africa, 1934 - 1950
When the RES Headquarters was rebuilt in 1934-36, gifts of timber for panelling and furnishing were obtained from Empire Governments, companies and individuals. Many were destroyed during the bombing of 1941 and replacement gifts were received. This file coordinates pre and post-war correspondence.

East Africa, 1910 - 1917
An album of undated and uncaptioned photographs of army officers and people in rural areas, probably dating from the same period as RCMS 316/2/3 . There are three loose photographs, one of which is dated '1917. B.E. Africa'.

82 x 82 mm. glass slides. The collection includes slides by Miss Margaret Laing, who served in CMS hospitals in Ngora/Ongino and Kumi, Uganda, during 1929-48. Items 17-23 are by Laing and 24-28 are probably hers as well.
East Africa, 1952 - 1955
The prints listed were chiefly from the files of the Photo Bureau, the majority being mounted on sheets of paper with substantial descriptions, and in many cases the negative attached. Titles and captions, including the names of institutions, have been recorded as found. Captions supplied by the cataloguer are enclosed in square brackets.

370 x 250 mm. The cut-out head-and-shoulder pictures of two boys have been stuck to the original photograph so that, at a glimpse, they appear to have been part of the original. They are located at the far-left and mid-right of the group. The caption on the back of the print reads: 'East Africa 1930. Left Aug.1.1930 returned Nov.22.1930. 29 boys 4 directors'.
