'This Wanderobo hunter sat on the stone which steadies the stick which marks the Equator (I used to think just such a stick marked the N Pole). He also has only a skin on for garment. A quiver at his back. A knife at his waist. The skin over his shoulders was very stiff and dark and difficult to express in drawing.'

70 x 80 mm. Half tone illustration cut from The Times. Richard Philip (Dick) King, (1813-1871) was a pioneer in Natal who acquired the sobriquet 'Saviour of Natal' in 1842 when he rode to Grahamstown to obtain help for the garrison under Captain Smith, besieged by the Boers near Congella. Annotated in the top left hand corner: 'Times April 17 sent by HFW'.

Scope and Contents A collection of photographs by Ernest Gedge comprising:(1) 81 prints, probably made in the 1920s. All these prints relate to the Jackson/Gedge Expedition of 1888-91 (see below). 80 are from negatives in the Royal Geographical Society and one from the negatives now in RCS (iii). Some new prints were obtained from the Royal Geographical Society in place of originals which had been stolen.(2) 1 print not in the above collection and taken from the RGS negative.(3) 11 glass...
