This is a collection of art work created by the Royal Engineer Edward Charles Frome (1802-1890). In 1929 Frome’s surviving daughter, Mrs Frank Wynne, presented some of the South Australian drawings to the Royal Empire Society through the good offices of Sir Harry Wilson, to whom she bequeathed the rest of the collection. An albumen print, mounted on card, measuring 206 x 138 mm, captioned 'St Helena' on the mount. The view looks down from the steep hillside at the summit on which the barracks were built, and shows the buildings lining Main Street which leads into the Grand Parade. At the edge of the Parade is St James' Church, with the Castle on the further side. The Esplanade, with the Harbour beyond, is at the left of the print.

The caption on the reverse reads: ' In spite of its date, the house manages to achieve dignity, proportion, and comeliness, aided by local architectural detail of chimneys, stepped roof, and welcoming arms steps.' There are two handwritten comments, in black ink, on the reverse: 'Sovay (?) No. 2' and 'No. 1 to overlap No. 2.' It is not known what this refers to, as there is no photograph numbered '2' in this collection.
