It was commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire, and designed and executed in 1929 by Beatrice (Lady) Murray. It was painted in the vestibule of the Craven Street entrance to the RCS Headquarters, extended down the staircase to the Commonwealth Hall, a venue which made photography difficult on account of awkward angles and lighting.
