Photographs of the Commonwealth Mural, 1983 - 1984

 File
Reference Code: GBR/0115/RCS/RCS/Ilf/19-31

Scope and Contents

A set of 13 photographs illustrating a mural on the theme 'Commonwealth Activity under the Colombo Plan'. It was commissioned by the Duke of Devonshire, and designed and executed in 1929 by Beatrice (Lady) Murray. It was painted in the vestibule of the Craven Street entrance to the RCS Headquarters, extended down the staircase to the Commonwealth Hall, a venue which made photography difficult on account of awkward angles and lighting. These colour photographs were taken by D.H. Simpson in 1983-84, and were intended as experimental shots preceding a proper photographic record. The mural, which had become somewhat soiled since the area was subject to through traffic, was painted over soon after, before a more adequate record could be made. Detailed descriptions of the photos may be found in the typescript catalogue.
