Scope and Contents The main bulk of the files are survey records. These document stations occupied, data, bearings, field sketches, and often include catalogues of specimens, localities, and photographs. These were written on 8x10” paper.The series also includes field notebooks (approx. 500) kept by each member of the party. Conditions Governing Access: From the Fonds: The papers are open for consultation by researchers using Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences. The Geological Conservation Unit [A.G Brighton and Colin Forbes Building] is open from Monday to Friday, 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00. A prior appointment made at least two weeks in advance, and two forms of identification are required. Journals and Sketchbooks, 1818 - 1846

Scope and Contents

Comprising numbered and unnumbered field notebooks and sketchbooks. The notebooks include details of: daily excursions and geological features; places visited including working mines and quarries; specimens collected or purchased; expenses; health matters; and include some social history commentary. The sketchbooks include pencil, ink and watercolour stratigraphic sketches of places visited.

Specimen Catalogues, 1949-1991

Scope and Contents

This series includes handwritten and typed specimen catalogues, many of which were written after the specimens arrived in the UK. There are also cabinets of index cards. The original handwritten specimen lists (often with accompanying location and photographic catalogues) can be located within the Expedition files (ref. CSEC 2).

The Papers of Adam Sedgwick

The collection comprises 64 notebooks and 11 boxes of annotated field maps, 1818-1858. There are also notes and papers relating to geology university teaching syllabuses, 1821 and 1832.
