A copy of a catalogue of the pictures at Leigh Court, Bristol, 83 folios. The copy was made by 'E. W.' (i.e. Edward Williams) from the original edition. There are 81 pictures, for each of which there is an etching and historical description. These are followed at fo. 68 by an alphabetical list of the painters of the pictures, in the same hand.

Manuscript in the Sandars Collection. Two notebooks on paintings in Italy, bound together. I. Notes on paintings and other works of art in Rome (fos 1-62). The main description is on the rectos, the versos are generally occupied by additional notes. An entry on fo. 29 is dated 17 January 1787. II. Similar notes for Florence, Bologna and other towns in Northern Italy (fos 63-162). Fos 85-112, 158-162 and many of the versos are blank.

The volume contains notes on bridge construction and on watercolour painting (fos 2-12); a journal of an excursion from Edinburgh to Arran and back, 1-9 May 1811, with notes of expenses (fos 13-20 and 44r-43r); undated notes of other travelling expenses (fo. 47r); pencil sketches, one of a crane at Bell Rock Lighthouse (fos 47v and 45); and addresses of London tradesmen (fo. 42v). A series of paintings of the eggs of British birds made from the specimens in the Portland museum, 97 folios. There is an index at fo. 91.

Scope and Contents The larger part of the collection dates from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, chronicling William Smith's personal and political career, as well as illustrating the lives of his wife Frances and their children. The collection includes letters from Smith's friends, among them Charles James Fox, William Wilberforce and Sir Francis Burdett. The papers also chronicle Smith's time in Paris in 1790, where he witnessed and recorded his reactions to the 14th July celebrations. The...
