The scrapbooks contain letters, press cuttings, sketch maps, printed army documents, including regulations and training instructions, tables of army rations, rough handwritten notes, movement orders, leave passes, sports papers and demobilisation papers. Photographs relating to the burial place of Colonel McCrae. John McCrae was born in Guelph, Ontario in 1872 and became a doctor. In 1914 he enlisted as a Medical Officer in the 1st Canadian Contingent, and died in France in January 1918. His poem, 'In Flanders Fields' inspired the use of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
