Philippa Fawcett: travel journal

Two handwritten journals kept by Phillipa Fawcett during a round the world trip taken with Blanche Athena Clough between November 1899 and July 1900.

Small later additions include an account of Phillipa Fawcett written by her friend Clotilda Marson (NC 1885), a letter to BA Clough from Philippa Fawcett October 1902 and a poem, apparently by Phillipa Fawcett written on the occasion of the funeral of AE Housman.

Scope and Contents The airship R101 crashed near Beauvais on 5 October 1930 on the first stage of its flight to India. 48 of the 54 on board were killed or later died. This postcard of the airship (135 x 185 mm), signed on the front by the six survivors, was given to the proprietors of the Mbeya Hotel. On the rear is written 'To Mr. and Mrs. Menzies. 1-11, 15-17 By Henry Winkelmann (1861-1931) who was a leading photographer in Auckland from the 1890s. Numbers 6 and 11 were issued with Golden Floss Cigarettes and the remainder with White Ensign Cigarettes. They all have titles on their fronts.
12-14 From a series of 50, 'Beautiful New Zealand', issued with Three Castles Virginia Cigarettes, taken by the New Zealand Government Publicity Office, and have printed descriptions on the backs.
