Papers and correspondence on controversy raised by JEP over discussions between a political researcher, and an official at the Northern Ireland Office over talks between the British and Irish Governments over the constitutional future of Northern Ireland, with correspondents including: Sir Robert Armstrong, Secretary of the Cabinet, on the accuracy of JEP's information and talks between the British and Irish Governments (6); Anthony Bevins [Political Correspondent of the Times] (2); Ian Gow [Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister] (9); James Prior, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland; John Wilkinson.
Also includes: press-cuttings; copy of a BBC poll on public views on immigration, particularly relating to JEP (1968); copies of papers (1950-52) on allegations in the American press that Britain and the United States were seeking to unify Ireland as a member of NATO, including telegrams from the British Embassy in Washington to the Commonwealth Relations Office, an American policy statement on relations with Ireland, a note of a discussion with the Prime Minister [Clement Attlee] on partition (1950-52 and a minute on progress towards Ireland's return to the Commonwealth; copy of an IRA staff report on reorganization; copies of correspondence between James Prior and James Molyneaux [Leader, Ulster Unionist Party]; note of meeting between JEP, Sir Robert Armstrong and Ian Gow; text of speech by JEP on alleged plans for a united Ireland, including references to the Sloan-Abbott conversations; transcripts of the Sloan-Abbot conversations.
