Scope and Contents

Letters to AHP from friends and acquaintances, mostly relating to AHP's visit to Bombay [Mumbai] and Calcutta [Kolkata], India in early 1895. Subjects and people include: Viscount Morpeth [later Charles Howard, 10th Earl of Carlisle]; William Collins Whitney; an invitation from the Maharajah of Jammu and Kashmir [region in China, India and Pakistan]; Harry Payne Whitney, regarding the shipping of his "Arab pony"; notice of AHP's election as an Honorary Member of the Royal Bombay Yacht Club; Pierre Jay (2); David Butler, AHP's servant in India who accompanied him on his return voyage; AHP's hunting and shooting trips in India; and various correspondence concerning invitations and social occasions. Also includes detailed account from Geo. W. Wheatley & Co. for shipping of Harry Payne Whitney's chestnut Arab horse from Bombay to New York, June 1895. With Anthony Pollen's annotations and notes on the letters.
