Scope and Contents

Letters to AHP from friends and acquaintances. Subjects and people include: William Robert Wellesley Peel [1st Earl Peel, The Viscount Peel], on studying history at Oxford and the Merton fellowship (5); Gilbert Murray; Alfred Marshall, responding to AHP's invitation to address the Palmerston Club; Mary Howard, including letter of thanks to AHP for the gift of a 'lovely book' (3); Percy Wyndham; Lord Basil Temple Blackwood (2); Jane Cobden, thanking AHP for his support in her election campaign for the London County Council (2); Wilfrid Meynell. Edward Perry Warren, on house hunting in England and their mutual admiration of a church in Rome; Lewis Vernon Harcourt [1st Viscount Harcourt], on campaigning in Enfield; and Gertrude Tennant, inviting AHP to her home to hear a young Spanish girl play the harp. Also includes annotated copy of AHP's examination questions on 'Foreign History' for the Merton College History Fellowship, October 1889; John Hungerford Pollen's ticket for the HMS Enchantress; and Navy ephemera. With Anthony Pollen's annotations and notes on the letters.

With the exception of the correspondence between Anthony Pollen and Jon Sumida, which remains closed until 2029, the collection is open for consultation by researchers using Churchill Archives Centre, Churchill College, Cambridge.
