Scope and Contents
Letters from Grace Hamblin, administrator of Chartwell [Kent] for the National Trust, on subjects including: work at Chartwell; paintings to be sent to Japan for exhibition, 1977; an exhibition in Philadelphia [United States], 1976; an exhibition in Sydney, Australia, 1975; problems with Oscar Nemon's statue of Sir Winston Churchill and CSC in Westerham; visitor numbers at Chartwell; filming with Sarah, Lady Audley [earlier Sarah Churchill, Sarah Oliver and Sarah Beauchamp] for a programme on Churchill and horses (1970); a statuette of Churchill by Oscar Nemon (the model for the larger statue in the House of Commons); opening to the public and the reactions of the first visitors to Chartwell.
Also includes: copy of a letter from the Churchills' former cook Georgina Landemare; lists of visitor numbers for Chartwell; a card showing Jock the Chartwell ginger cat; letters from correspondents including Sir William Ramsay, President of the Rugby Football Union, asking if he could borrow a painting by Churchill of a rugby line-out for an exhibition at Twickenham [London] (2), from John Colville on whether to insure Churchill's paintings and from 13th Lord Antrim, Chairman of the National Trust [earlier Lord Dunluce], on Chartwell's success; a list of shrubs for the gardens, 1966; the text of the original guide book.
