Diaries, 1939 - 2013

 Sub-Series
Reference Code: GBR/0014/MCHL 1/1

Scope and Contents

These diaries are especially detailed during the war, covering MS’s life with her family and then as an officer with the Auxiliary Territorial Service. They remain quite detailed up to the mid-1950s, after which they mainly concern gardening, with the exception of the diary for 1979-80, which covers CS's spell as Governor of Southern Rhodesia [later Zimbabwe].

Bibliography

MS drew heavily on her diaries for her memoirs, "A Daughter's Tale", published by Doubleday, 2011, while the edited wartime diaries were published by Two Roads in "Mary Churchill's War", 2021.

General

These diaries were heavily interleaved, both with contemporary notes and with post-it notes, presumably added by MS at a later date when she was using the diaries as a source for her memoirs. When they were digitised, each opening of the diaries was scanned firstly with the inserts in place, and then secondly with the inserts removed, where they were obscuring the text.

Date information

DateText: The majority of the diaries date from 1939 to the 1980s.
