Scope and Contents

Alan Lascelles was Secretary to Lord Bessborough [Vere Brabazon Ponsonby, 9th Earl of Bessborough], Governor General of Canada, 1931-5.
Including photographs of Rideau Hall, the Governor General's official residence in Ottawa (also known as Government House), 1931; Lord Bessborough being sworn in at Halifax, 1931; Lord Bessborough's ADCs, Sir John Child and Robin Steuart-French ("John Child in uniform and out"), undated [1931 and 1932]; the Lascelles family on summer holidays at Mackay Lake, undated [1931 and 1932]; Charles Lindbergh's seaplane at Rockliffe Aerodrome, 1931; views of Montreal, undated [1931]; Alan and Joan Lascelles on a fishing trip to 31 Mile Lake, undated [1931]; the Lascelles family skiing, sledging, skating and playing ice hockey in the winter, with Lord Bessborough and his eldest son, Lord Duncannon [Frederick Edward Neuflize Ponsonby, later 10th Earl of Bessborough, known as Eric Bessborough], among others, 1931 and [1932]; aerial views of New York, including the recently completed Chrysler Building, undated [1932]; presentation of the Colours to the Governor General's Footguards, 1932; the Lascelles family at Tadoussac and Medicine Lake, undated [1932]; Rideau Cottage and the rock garden, undated [1932]; Lord Bessborough presiding over the Opening of the Parliamentary Session, 1932; press cuttings about the Imperial Economic Conference in Ottawa, including Stanley Baldwin, Neville Chamberlain, Leo Amery, Lord Hailsham [Douglas Hogg, 1st Viscount Hailsham] and Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister [later 1st Earl of Swinton], 1932; and the Lascelles family on holiday by the sea in an unidentified location, undated.

Permission to consult CLOSED material within the Lascelles papers (LASL 1/2/1-6; and sections of LASL 2-4) and the catalogue describing the closed material must be obtained from the Royal Archives.
