Scope and Contents
Correspondence with 1st Lord Athlone, Governor General and with General James Hertzog, Prime Minister, on subjects including: the British General Election, 1929; the cost of development in Swaziland [later Eswatini]; finding new administrators for the Protectorates of Swaziland, Basutoland [later Lesotho] and Bechuanaland [later Botswana]; the South African flag; the status of the South African High Commissioner in London; LSA's visit to South Africa during his Empire Tour.
Other correspondents include: George Hogg, Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, sending information on the extraction of oil from coal; Henry Birch Reynardson [Secretary to Athlone] on breaches of the South African Mail Contract by the Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company Limited; 1st Lord Kylsant [earlier Owen Philipps] on the Union-Castle case, with a memorandum on the Union-Castle line's undertakings under a new contract.
