Biographical / Historical

A group of three garden house buildings situated in the north west part of the college site near the Wolfson Flats were designed by Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture to house thirty postgraduate students. Each house has communal areas and kitchens, and each room has shower facilities. One of the houses is equipped for use by students with disabilities. The design, with prominent tile roofs, was inspired by arts and crafts buildings in Storey's Way and the buildings won a 2003 RIBA award. The garden houses are 40 a,b and c Storey's Way and are located on the Whittingehame site. 40a is Bondi House (staircase 63, shown on the plans as house 2). 40b is Broers House (staircase 62, house 1 on the plans). 40c is Hawthorne House (staircase 61, shown as house 3 on the plans). They have become known as the 'pepperpots'.

Other contractors involved with the project were: Buro Happold (structural engineer); Max Fordham and Partners (services engineer); David Langdon and Everest (quantity surveyor); John Moore (Head of Ground and Gardens, Landscape Architect); C G Franklin (building contractor). The cost of the project was £1.65 million.
