The College has had seven Masters: 1) Sir John Cockcroft (1897-1967), Master 1959-1967, Nobel Laureate in Physics, 2) Professor Sir William Hawthorne (born 1913), Master 1968-1983, who helped develop the jet engine; 3) Professor Sir Hermann Bondi (born 1919), Master 1983-1990, cosmologist, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Defence 1971-1977; 4) Professor Sir Alec Broers (born 1938), Master 1990-1996, nanotechnologist; 5) Sir John Boyd, KCMG (born 1936), Master 1996-2006, former Ambassador to Japan 6) Professor Sir David Wallace CBE, FRS, FREng (born 1945), Master 2006-2014 7) Dame Athene Donald DBE, FRS (born 1953), Master 2014-
