Scope and Contents

All letters marked up for publication, with transcripts. Subjects include: Shaw's advice to AFB not to appeal against the ban on his play "The Devil's Business"; the work of the Fabian Society's Prison System Inquiry Committee and Shaw's preface to "English Prisons under Local Government", by Sidney and Beatrice Webb [see FEBR 7/3]; a planned lecture by Shaw at Lancaster, November 1920; Shaw's resignation from the Labour Research Department, 1921; a book by AFB on India and Shaw's view on the chances for Indian independence; Shaw's views on killing; capital punishment; peace demonstrations and Shaw's inability to understand the purpose of the Independent Labour Party since the Labour Party was established in Parliament; the opposition between Trade Unionism and Socialism; AFB's candidacy in the Westminster (Abbey) division by-election, 1924 and Shaw's opinion of the other candidates, including Winston Churchill; the anti-conscription manifesto, 1925; the likely effect of Shaw's book [? "The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Socialism and Capitalism"] on the 1929 General Election; the Home Office's refusal to allow the film "Battleship Potemkin" to be screened; a production of the play "Brain" by Lionel Britton, 1930; a protest against the execution of the Hungarian revolutionary labour poet Fritz Karikas; the snobbishness of the ILP towards other Socialist groups; the ILP manifesto, 1933; Shaw's response to the Abyssinia Crisis; AFB's book [?"Inside the Left: a Political Autobiography]; an ILP Conference resolution pledging to organise conscientious objection to military service against the Soviet Union, 1943; Shaw's similar view to Frederick Jowett on abolishing the Party System; advising AFB against starting an Anti-Imperialist movement, 1945; the British Aid for German Workers Committee; AFB's election as MP for Eton and Slough, 1950; AFB's gratitude to Shaw for the influence of his writings on AFB's own life and for his kindness to him.

Also includes a copy of the original itemised list to the letters and proofs of Shaw's article "Some Recent Remarkable Speeches", March 1943, mainly on Churchill's speeches.
