Literary papers , The majority of files date from 1961-1980
Scope and Contents
Mainly drafts and proofs of some of AFB's many publications, particularly two of his four autobiographical works, "Outside the Right" and "Towards Tomorrow", his history "Britain’s First Socialists" and his large-scale work "The Colonial Revolution".
There is also some original material from George Bernard Shaw. As Organising and General Secretary of the Independent Labour Party, and Editor of the New Leader, AFB had considerable correspondence with Shaw; the majority of these letters he published, with Shaw's permission, in "Outside the Right". Shaw also collaborated with the Prison System Enquiry, and wrote a preface for the report which was not used, and several letters refer to this. AFB's relationship with Shaw is represented in the Brockway papers in FEBR 7/1-7, comprising 47 original letters, proof copies of Shaw's projected preface, and drafts and copies for "Outside the Right".
