Scope and Contents
Letters written from the British Embassy in Paris [France] while FR was serving as 3rd Secretary, mainly relating to his day to day life and work. Other subjects include: FR's view that David Lloyd George was a better politician than those of the present day; the chaotic French administration and political crisis, February 1934, involving the death of [Serge] Alexandre Stavisky; FR's disapproval of the idea of women being diplomats; his admiration for [Robert] Anthony Eden [later 1st Lord Avon]; the replacement of Sir William Tyrrell by Sir George Clerk, as British Ambassador to France; FR's pessimism about Germany and the chances of war; the murder of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia and [the French Foreign Minister] Jean Louis Barthou in Marseilles; FR's next posting to Cairo [Egypt].
