Scope and Contents
Correspondence, mainly on support for AFB's Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland and the increase in sectarian violence, with correspondents including: Martin Ennals, Secretary General of Amnesty International, on their report into the Compton Commission [regarding allegations of brutality carried out by the security forces, August 1971]; 3rd Lord Windlesham [Minister of State for Northern Ireland, earlier David Hennessy]; Lord Shackleton [Opposition Leader, House of Lords] on AFB's request for a recall of Parliament, August 1971 [following the internment of a large number of suspected IRA members in 'Operation Demetrius']; 4th Lord O'Hagan (2); 7th Lord Longford [earlier Lord Pakenham] on subjects including a Question raised by AFB in the House of Lords on penal reform, relating to punishment at Parkhurst prison, and AFB's Bill (3); Francis McManus; Shirley Williams, Minister of State, Home Office, on the refusal of bail in a criminal case; John Ryan on AFB's Bill; Stanley Orme on AFB's Bill; Paul Rose on AFB's Bill and also his disapproval of the cover of the Movement for Colonial Freedom's 'Liberation' magazine on the Middle East, as taking sides with racists (2); 3rd Lord Kilbracken [earlier John Godley].
Also includes a wooden plaque inscribed to AFB from prisoners held at Long Kesh prison [later the Maze Prison].
