Scope and Contents
Papers and correspondence on attempts to end the civil war between NIgeria and Biafra and bring famine relief for Biafra, arising from AFB's role as Chairman of the Committee for Peace in Nigeria. Correspondents include: Hugh Jenkins on accompanying AFB as a representative of his local Labour party in Putney [London] when AFB next saw George Thomson, Secretary of State for Commonwealth Affairs; George Catlin, offering his help and suggesting that an objective body such as the Fabian Society, should survey the situation in Nigeria-Biafra relating to oil interests (2); Tom McNally, Labour Party Overseas Department, on the Labour Party's request for Socialist International intervention; Edward Oliver, Secretary General of the Social Morality Council (2); Bruce Kent (2); 2nd Lord Shepherd, Minister of State for Commonwealth Affairs, on the resumption of war in Biafra; [James] Harold Wilson, Prime Minister, on hopes for a settlement, AFB's deputation to see the Commonwealth Secretary [George Thomson], AFB's correspondence with Chukwuemeka Ojukwu [President of Biafra] and talks among African Heads of State at a meeting of the Organisation of African Unity (3); [Robert] Michael Stewart [Foreign Secretary] on AFB's peace proposals; James Griffiths (2).
Also includes: copies of various open letters from AFB to Harold Wilson, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, General Yakubu Gowon [Nigerian Head of State] and others, on the war; minutes of meetings; shorthand notes from a deputation to Michael Stewart.
