Scope and Contents

Correspondence on the ending of the civil war between NIgeria and Biafra and attempts to bring famine relief for Biafra, arising from AFB's role as Chairman of the Committee for Peace in Nigeria. Correspondents include: Lester Pearson, Chairman of the Commission on International Development; James Griffiths on his and AFB's meeting with [Robert] Michael Stewart [Foreign Secretary], also advising writing to Lester Pearson and on his fears for a calamitous... end to the conflict (2); Philip Noel-Baker [earlier Philip Baker], on asking Lester Pearson to mediate in Nigeria; Pierre Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, on Canada's continuing interest in ending the dispute, particularly relating to the use of impartial observers and the refusal by Chukwuemeka Ojukwu [President of Biafra] to allow any delivery of relief by daylight, and also on the end of the war (2); Hugh Elliott [former Adviser, Government of Eastern Nigeria] (2); Peter Moon, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (2); Maurice Foley, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, on the position of Biafran students in Britain; Lord Shackleton, Leader of the House of Lords, on his decision not to allow a Question by AFB on Nigeria; Merlyn Rees, Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Home Office, on the position of Biafrans in Britain; Joseph Luns [Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs].
