Scope and Contents

Correspondence on attempts to end the civil war between NIgeria and Biafra and bring famine relief for Biafra, arising from AFB's role as Chairman of the Committee for Peace in Nigeria. Correspondents include: 11th Lord Strabolgi [earlier David Kenworthy]; Cecil Patterson, Archbishop of West Africa (2); Dorothea, Lady Head; Bertrand Russell (3rd Lord Russell) disagreeing with AFB's proposal to send a letter urging action on Biafra to [James] Harold Wilson, Prime Minister, as the Government was unlikely to stop its own arms sales to Nigeria; Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury [earlier Lady Violet Bonham-Carter and Violet Asquith] on the use of napalm in Biafra and the Biafra Relief and Rehabilitation Organisation (2); 1st Lord Boyd of Merton [earlier Alan Lennox-Boyd] on the Save the Children Fund team which visited Biafra; Frank Allaun; Harold Hanbury on subjects including his disappointment with the Government's attitude and his fears about General Yakubu Gowon (2); "Jim" [Laurence] Gower on his concern at the suggestion that 'Zik' [Nnamdi Azikiwe, former President of Nigeria] should be invited to Britain by the Government for talks; John Stanley, Institute for Strategic Studies; Tom McNally, Labour Party Overseas Department; Goronwy Roberts, Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Includes: photographs of starving children in Biafra, as used in articles by AFB; transcriptions of interviews with Dr Ted Johnson, Presbyterian Church of Canada, and with James Johnson, on their recent visits to Biafra; copies of AFB's letters to the press.
