Scope and Contents
Correspondence and other papers concerning the Council for the Advancement of Arab-British Understanding (CAABU). Correspondents include: Sir Anthony Buzzard, Chairman of the British Council of Churches Advisory Committee on the Middle East, enclosing notes and copies of his letters to the press on the Middle East peace talks (3); John Reddaway, CAABU Director of Administration, on CAABU's committee structure; Lord Wells-Pestell on his memorandum on the treatment of Jews in Arab countries; 1st Lord Silkin on Arab detainees in Israel; 3rd Lord Russell [Bertrand Russell]; Lord Caradon [earlier Hugh Foot] on the need for an international peace conference; Ahmed Hassan El Feki, Ambassador of the United Arab Republic [of Egypt and Syria] to Britain, inviting AFB to the international conference of parliamentarians on the Middle East; Sir Barnett Janner on the treatment of Jews in Iraq; Lord Chalfont, Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office [earlier Alun Gwynne Jones] on which countries had accepted the United Nations Security Council Resolution of November 1967 on the Middle East; [Cora] Wendy Campbell-Purdie.
Also includes: minutes of meetings and other CAABU committee papers; papers from the British Council of Churches on the Middle East crisis; papers fro the Second World Conference on Palestine, 1970; print of an address by Lord Caradon for the Doan Distinguished Lectureship, "What Hope for the Middle East?"; Arab League review of British press coverage of the Middle East, August 1969.
