Scope and Contents

Mainly correspondence between HL and Rachel Lauterpacht with Elihu Lauterpacht, on subjects including: a Grotius Society conference for international lawyers; preparations for Elihu's return to Britain; proofs for Oppenheim and "An International Bill of the Rights of Man", continued editing work on the Annual Digest and the Year Book of International Law and HL's memorandum for the Jewish World Congress on war crimes; an opinion of whether the Government could admit Red Cross personnel who had escaped from occupied Europe.

Other correspondents include: Sir [Herbert] William Malkin [Legal Adviser to the Foreign Office] on subjects including HL's request to be allowed to publish a minute from 1st Lord Curzon in an article, and correcting him about British approval of the German incorporation of Austria in 1938 (2) [see also LAUT 4/30 for a copy of the article and copies of Foreign Office minutes about it]; Green Hackworth, Legal Adviser to the American State Department, on HL's review of his "Digest of International Law".
