Scope and Contents
Mainly correspondence between HL and Rachel Lauterpacht with Elihu Lauterpacht, on subjects including: Rachel's work with refugee children and her plan for a youth hostel or club; Elihu's school life; HL's work on revising part of his book ["Recognition in International Law"] for the Yale Law Journal, as an article on Recognition of States; meetings with Philip Noel-Baker and Lawrence Preuss, the American assistant commissioner on the Inter-Allied Committee for the investigation of war crimes; preparations for Elihu's return to Britain; an Old Vic theatre production of Therese Raquin, with Flora Robson; a dinner party for Harold Laski and his and HL's views on the Soviet Union's actions in Poland; advising Elihu on an essay about freedom of speech.
Other correspondents include: Nevile Butler, Assistant Under-Secretary of State, Foreign Office, on HL's memorandum [on a joint Anglo-American board for investigating injuries to commercial interests arising from the war]; Sir [Herbert] William Malkin [Legal Adviser to Foreign Office] advising against bringing out a number of the Year Book of International Law during the war.
