Scope and Contents
Mainly correspondence between HL and Rachel Lauterpacht with Elihu Lauterpacht, on subjects including: HL's revision of the sixth edition of Oppenheim's war volume and the pressure of his other writing work; Elihu's school life; plans to meet Lawrence Preuss, a member of the American delegation on war crimes, and E H Carr, and HL's planned article on Implied Recognition, taken from his unpublished book ["Recognition in International Law"]; Rachel's work with Jewish refugee children.
Other correspondents include: Joseph Hertz, Chief Rabbi, on Rachel's Cambridge committee for Jewish refugee children; Nevile Butler, Assistant Under-Secretary of State, Foreign Office, on HL's 1942 memorandum suggesting a joint board to investigate injuries to British or American commercial interests by the administration of the war economy.
Also includes Elihu's later research notes on HL's request to publish a Foreign Office minute on recognition, and reference to the superior orders defence in war crimes cases, as set out in the Military Manual.
