Scope and Contents

Correspondents include: Arnold McNair on subjects including a visit to Spain, his opinion on the Saar, his joint work with W W Buckland ["Roman Law and Common Law"], his different approach to HL on legal matters, his belief in collective security, costs for the Annual Digest, editing L F L Oppenheim's "International Law", his teaching syllabus, his decision to resign the Whewell professorship at the University of Cambridge in order to become Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool, lecturing at Columbia University, New York [United States] and HL succeeding him [as Whewell Professor of International Law] at Cambridge (25); Sir William Beveridge, Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science, on HL becoming a Reader at LSE (2); Rachel Lauterpacht, writing to Elihu Lauterpacht; HL writing to Elihu on subjects including life at school (3) and to Rachel on a visit to Silvaplana [Switzerland]; Elihu writing to his parents (2); [William] Eric Beckett [2nd Legal Adviser, Foreign Office] on individual rights under international law (2).

Also includes copies of correspondence between HL and [James] Maxwell Garnett, Secretary of the League of Nations Union, on HL's draft of the Peace Act, particularly the question of economic sanctions.
