Speech notes and typescript for WSC's speech (17 April 1953, Scottish Unionist Association Annual General Meeting, Green's Playhouse, Glasgow [Scotland]) entitled "The Government's Record" on subjects including: the latest Budget, including tax cuts and the encouragement of free enterprise; the strengthened Government position; relations with the Trade Unions; the drop in unemployment; support for the Welfare State; the housing situation; the Labour Government's financial mismanagement; charges of war- mongering against the Government, and new hopes for world peace. Source material includes draft notes by: Christopher Soames [Parliamentary Private Secretary to WSC] on support for the Government, the Welfare State and nationalization; Sir Norman Brook [later 1st Lord Normanbrook, Secretary to the Cabinet] and the Conservative Research Department on the issues of the last election, false Labour claims against the Government, the improved outlook for peace, foreign policy, the economic outlook and social progress; Harold Macmillan [later 1st Lord Stockton], Minister of Housing and Local Government, on the housing situation, including housing subsidies and rates; Patrick Blair [Political Secretary to the Chairman of the Scottish Unionist Party] on the Government's democratic aims, with a letter from James Stuart [Secretary of State for Scotland]; George Christ [Parliamentary Liaison Officer, Conservative Party] on the Transport and Steel Bills, the economy and false Labour forecasts, and notes for a cancelled broadcast by Anthony Eden [later 1st Lord Avon, Foreign Secretary] on the Conservative view of the future, private enterprise, housing and the dangers of isolationism; Conservative Research Department notes on relations between Britain and the United States; a copy of Hansard including a speech by WSC in a foreign affairs debate (December 1948); an issue of the Times.
