Speech notes for WSC's speech (1 July, House of Commons) entitled "The Korean War" on subjects including the early demoralization of Communist forces in Korea, then the success of their negotiations and rebuilt forces; the heavy costs suffered by Britain and the United States during the armistice; harm caused by anti-American feeling in Parliament; the treatment and exchange of prisoners of war, including forcing anti-Communist soldiers to return to China or North Korea; Labour's motion of censure on the lack of consultation by the United States over its bombing of North Korean power stations; the agreement to have a Commonwealth military representative on the United States staff, and the parallel with North Africa, 1942 - 3; the setback in the advance by United States forces in Korea in 1950; the risk of the United States concentrating on China rather than the defence of Western Europe; the visit by Field Marshal 1st Lord Alexander [of Tunis, Minister of Defence] to Korea; Britain's recognition of China.
