Scope and Contents
Includes lists of the speeches made by WSC between 1945 and 1954 with details of the place of delivery, subjects covered and numbers of words. Speech notes for WSC's speech (20 October 1945, Woodford [Essex]) on receiving the freedom of the Borough of Wanstead and Woodford on subjects including: his long association with Essex and his disappointment at not being re-elected. Allso includes an invitation card for the event [see also GBR/0014/CSCT 3/54]. Hansard report and speech notes for WSC's speech (22 October 1945, House of Commons) on demobilisation of the forces in the army, navy and RAF and on the scheme proposed by Ernest Bevin [when Minister of Labour and National Service]. Source material includes: a letter from Frederick Leathers [former Minister of War Transport]; a statement by George Isaacs, Minister of Labour and National Service; and a copy of Hansard reporting on railways, transport, the Women's Land Army and political prisoners. Speech notes for WSC's speech at the Alamein dinner (23 October 1945, Claridge's Hotel, London) about the battle of El Alamein [Egypt] and the changes of command which were required including praise for the achievements of General Harold Alexander as Commander in Chief Middle East and Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery as Commander of the Eighth Army. Also includes a copy of Montgomery's speech introducing WSC and a newspaper cutting. Published: Complete Speeches VII, pp 7235-6.
