Scope and Contents
Letter from Lord Gladstone (Home Office) to WSC marked "confidential"concerning the Home Office and the position of Home Secretary. Subjects covered include: honours and staff appointments; recommendations and observations on staff issues including praise for Sir Edward Troup [Permanent Under Secretary of State, Home Office]; advice on the urgency of legislation; the Factory and Prison Departments and the Mines Commission. Lord Gladstone advises WSC of the value of supervising sentences "you will be repaid by being able to lift up not a few miserable creatures out of trouble and disgrace." The letter contains manuscript alterations and post scripts in Lord Gladstone's hand including a recommendation that a booklet summarising recent criminal legislation be compiled. Signed typescript with manuscript additions. Includes envelope marked confidential, addressed to WSC.
