Dispute over appointment of stewards, 1723-04 - 1771
Scope and Contents
Correspondence between John Smith and Edward Beetham (First and Second Bursars), transcriptions of precedents and statutes, and notes by them both, almost entirely about the election of a Steward in April 1766 (draft and copy minutes of the Congregation meetings are included). Also includes:
- description by Smith of the admission of copyholders and appointment of stewards;
- copy appointment of Weyman Lee to be steward of Dunton Waylett (undated, 1720-43);
- on the verso of one sheet, 'Exhibitio Choristarum' or choristers' accounts for 1723;
- extracts from the statutes of New College Oxford;
- two draft letters to the Visitor [from the Provost] and two letters from Th. Cust [to the Provost],
- [copy?] letter from J Evans [to the Provost] 1731;
- discharge of Edward Betham as First Bursar, 1771;
- opinion of William Wynne.
