Death of Edward Vance, 1854-04-03 - 1854-04-12
Scope and Contents
Edward Brenton Vance (c 1826-54, KC 1846) had the misfortune to die of an aortic aneurysm whilst visiting a bordello. This file comprises:
- newspaper cuttings from 'The English Churchman' (6 April 1854) reporting his death and from 'The Times' (5 April 1854) reporting the death and testimony at the inquisition;
- letters to the Vice Provost at the time (Robert Bacon) from members George Williams and [James] Buller and two letters from the Vice Provost to the Provost (Richard Okes);
- Letter from the Vice Provost to the Borough Coroner (David King) stating that the College would hold the inquest, and reply from the Coroner asserting his right to hold the inquest.
An envelope inscribed 'For Mr. F. Whitting RO 1881' indicates that the Provost passed these papers to Whitting for safe keeping.
