Mansfield, James, 1734 - 1821
Scope and Contents
Sir James Mansfield (bap. James Manfield 1734, d. 1821) was at Eton College 1745-50 and was then elected a scholar to King's College. Here, he changed his surname from Manfield to Mansfield. His Fellowship was given in 1754, BA in 1755 (when he was also admitted at the Middle Temple) and MA in 1758 (when he was also called to the bar). From 1780 to 1782 he was solicitor-general. He was appointed chief justice of Chester in 1799 and chief justice of the common pleas in 1804, when he was knighted. This is a photogravure print of an engraving by C Turner of a portrait by H Edridge.
