Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series comprises correspondence with family, friends and colleagues, often enclosing unpublished articles or papers written by others and forwarded by the author or helpful third-parties. Although a large part of the correspondence is, as one would suspect, on personal matters, perhaps an even greater share is devoted to exchanges with colleagues on economic subjects. Discussions range across the topics of interest rates, wages, employment, inflation, equilibrium, competition, monopoly and J.M. Keynes' 'General Theory', among others. A great deal of energy was spent considering the problems of development and underdevelopment, reflecting Joan Robinson's particular interest in Marxism and the economic and political conditions in countries such as India and China. Criticism of Robinson's own work, especially the early texts 'Economics is a Serious Subject' and 'Economics of Imperfect Competition', also formed part of discussions. An effort has been made to note subject content within descriptions of individual items and files.
