Typescripts, 1933 - 1999

 Sub-Sub Series

Scope and Contents

No diary typescripts survive for the years: 1936-37, 1939, 1947, 1970-72, and 1974. It is possible that the typescripts covering 1970-72 and 1974 were destroyed by Frances Partridge after the publication of 'Life Regained' and 'Ups and Downs'. The typescripts were given page numbers, but Frances Partridge removed many pages before publication due to the sensitive nature of their contents. She often completed the opening sentence in manuscript at the top of the next page along with the diary date. This explains why the numbered sequence of pages is often interrupted. The page numbers of missing sheets have been recorded in the entry for each diary. Some pages have been cut in half and the number lost, but is identifiable as one of the missing pages. In these cases, the missing page number has still been recorded and the total of un-numbered pages has been noted.

Conditions Governing Access

Certain diaries are closed under the terms of the Data Protection Act (1998) because they contain sensitive information about living individuals. Researchers may apply in writing to the Archivist to see the closed material, stating the intended use and precise nature of the information requested. The Archivist and Frances Partridge's Literary Executor will then consider whether non-sensitive parts of the diary may be made available. Please be aware that this decision may take several weeks and may incur photocopying charges. A statement to this effect is given with each closed file.

Arrangement

The typescript of 'Memories', published in 1981, has been placed in the Writings category (FCP/1/1) because it contains narrative with diary extracts rather than transcripts of diary entries. The diaries were found arranged chronologically in box files with one or two years per box. In some cases, diaries for each year have now been divided into several archival envelopes for security and ease of use. In the typescript from 1976 to 1992 (FCP/3/1/1/35-51), the typist seems to have begun a new numbering sequence with each manuscript notebook (which were not transferred to King's). Frances Partridge re-arranged the sheets so that one calendar year was held in one folder, but this means that two or more numbering sequences exist.
