Part i: Letter from Axel Boëthius, describing his recent experiences in Rome and new interest in the Baroque. He then discusses his wish to retire the following July. He ends with personal news and a discussion of Renaissance villas.
Part ii: Report by Boëthius (in Italian) discussing the excavations beneath St Peter's, the Vatican, of Palaeo-Christian material between 1940 and 1949. Boëthius disagrees with the chronology suggested by Ward-Perkins and Toynbee. The report is marked 'confidential' at the top.
