Scope and Contents
Notebook F:
Middleton's notes on classical architecture and topography, mainly in Athens. He provides an index on the flyleaf.
In particular his focus is upon the monuments on the acropolis of Athens and its environs: Temple of Olympian Zeus, Erectheum, Parthenon, Propylaea, Askleipion, Stoa of Eumenes, Theatre of Dionysius, Stoa of Attalus,Dipylon, Theseum.
Also plans and drawings of the Heraion at Olympia, Tiryns, Mycenae, Corinth, Epidauros, Rome - Museum Papa Guilio (Villa Giulia), Greek coins, theatre at Tusculum.
Regarding the 3 leaves of handwritten inserts: J.G. Frazer's letter, dated 18 October 1893, comments on the dating of the Lycosura and the peplos on statues of Athena, .
The bifolio list of 'Stillman's Etchings of Athens' - William J. Stillman was JHM's father-in-law.
Notebook G:
Notes and drawings of Greek inscriptions, mainly found in Athens.
Pasted in to the gutter before the Index, a hand drawn sketch in pencil of the inscriptuion on the top of the frieze of the 'Adicula by the door of the Atrium Vestae', initialled and dated by JHM 'Rome 1884'.
3 inserts of printed text and image pasted in to the gutter at f.5v, f.7v, f.8v.

Physical Description
Soft cover notebook with dark brown, glossy leather covers, worn and bumped edges on all 3 sides of the cover, loss to top and bottom of spine.
Pasted on to the spine 2 small paper handwritten label with the text 'NOTES' and 'INSCRIPTNS. Pasted on to the front cover, "F' and 'Class. Arch.' and to the back cover, 'G' and 'GREEK INSCRIPTIONS'.
Handwritten in ink with hand drawn illustrations in graphite pencil and gouache wash. The 'front' of the notebook is deciated to notes on Classical Archaeology, then one inverts the book and at the 'back' is the seond half of the notebook, dedicated to Greek inscriptions.
Printed illustrations and newspaper articles on paper, cut out from publications, have been pasted in throughout.
Notebook F:
2 partially pasted-in inserts which occlude the main body text: a sketch pasted in to the gutter f. 12 v, a sketch on paper folded in half at p. 28.
I loose insert within text block: printed plan of the theatre at Epidauros, placed between pp. 67-68
8 loose leaves of printed matter at front of notebook: clippings from The Tmes 1870 on 'The Moabite Stone', The Builder on 'Lycosura', The Builder Jan 30 1892 on the 'Peplos', 2 leaves of The Builder April 6 1889 on 'Architectural Remains at Athens', JHM annotated image of the Acropolis at Athens, JHM annotated text from a publication on the 'Parthenon Treasure', bifolio advertisement for Sandys 'Aristotle's Constituition of Athens' 1893.
3 loose leaves of handwritten material: 1 bifolio of a letter written in ink by J.G. Frazer, 1 bifolio of a list by JHM of Stillman's Etchings of Athens,and 1 leaf of a JHM 'to do' list.
Foliated in pencil by JHM at the top centre of the recto until it changes to pagination after f. 15.
Notebook G:
4 inserts pasted in to the gutter of the book: 1 hand drawn sketch of an inscription pasted in t at the front, where the flyleaf has been excised along with 23 other pages; 3 clippings of printed text and image pasted in to the gutter at f.5v, f.7v, f.8v.
