Notebook XA, April 1892
Scope and Contents
Inscribed on the flyleaf, 'J. Hen. Middleton, E. Coll. Regal. Soc.' and a later addition, 'Grand Hotel - Athens April 1892'' and 'Notebook XA'.
The notebook consists of Middleton's notes on classical architecture and topography in Athens during the Spring of 1892.
In particular his focus is upon the monuments on the acropolis of Athens: Propylaea, Stoa of Attalus, the Parthenon, the Erechtheum, the Asklpeion, the theatre of Dionysius, the Acropolis walls.
Also a bridge between Nauplia and Epidaurus, the Epidaurus theatre and museum, Delos inscription, Pompeii mosaics arrangement, the harbour at Munychia (Μουνιχία), Piraeus.
JHM created his own index to the notebook contents on a seaprate leaf of paper, placed between the front cover and flyleaf.

Physical Description
Soft cover notebook with dark brown, glossy leather covers, worn edges and top and bottom of spine bumped.
Pasted on to the spine a small paper handwritten label with the text 'XA'.
Handwritten in ink with hand drawn illustrations in graphite pencil and gouache wash.
1 loose insert: 1 bifolio, of handwritten notes in pencil on 4 pp. placed between the front cover and flyleaf, providing an index to the contents.
Paginated in pencil by JHM at the top left and right hand corners of verso and recto respectively.
