Letter from James Stewart in Sydney re hopes and plans for his forthcoming trip to Asia Minor and Cyprus, 1935-09-01
Scope and Contents
Addressed and dated 'Sydney, 1 September 1935', Stewart is thankful for delaying his trip as he has had some wisdom teeth extracted. He and Eleanor have decided that they cannot live in Australia, which decision clarifies their options. He is networking with potential financial backers for an excavation in Asia Minor, using his connection to Sir Flinders Petrie and a newspaper editor to help his case. Staying with Noel Wheeler in Cyprus is his fall back plan if funding runs dry. Stewart has been elected a Student at the BSA. There follows a detailed explanation of why he considers Ormerod's ceramic finds to be Middle Bronze Age. He mentions 'photomicrography' as a means of recording and comparing pot body textures. He finishes by expressing the hope that Cyprus will be the key to understanding 'several Asia Minor problems' i.e. establishing pottery type sequences.
