Scope and Contents
The earliest papers in the file date to 1944. These comprise correspondence as follows:
Marcus Tod to H. I. Bell on inscriptions from Tocra (Teuchira) copied by Bell's cousin, Major Humphrey Thackrah, togteher with a list of notes on the inquiry by J. Allan, typescript, 2 ff., dated 1944/08/16
H. Thackrah to Brigadier D. C. Cumming summarising the findings for his commanding offcier, typescript on pink paper, 1 f., dated 1944/10/27
4 leaves of typescript memos from C. J. Gadd (1944/06/26), J. Allan to Bell (1944/07/04 and 1944/07.24 on a 'Drusus' coin and a Byzanrine coin), D. C. Cumming to Major Hyslop a cover note re all the above paperwork (1944/11/02)
3 monochrome photographs of Cyrenaican landscapes with architectural remanants from antiquity
The rest of the file, as organised by JMR, references back to these inscriptions first discussed in 1944 and builds into discussion with various correspondents about the inscriptions of Cyrenaica. Correspondents include a grouping of letters between Goodchild, and JMR, with 2 letters from Shimon Applebaum, discussing inscriptions in detail with a view to building the IRC, dated between 1954 and 1965.
The remainder of letters are from a variety of correspondents, including Fergus Millar, Eric Birley, Awad Sadawya, Olwen Brogan, Ronald Syme, and others identified by first name or illegible signature.
The file includes 3 prototype check lists - with a concordance to CA numbers - for Inscriptions of Roman Cyrenaica (undated).
